The essentials
- Estimate tick risk and costs before selecting quantity.
- Submission, acknowledgement and fill are different states.
- Disconnecting or pausing a chart does not cancel orders.
Translate a price distance into a planning estimate
A basic planning estimate is stop distance in ticks multiplied by tick value and contract quantity. Add a separate allowance for costs and execution uncertainty. This calculation is a scenario, not a guaranteed maximum loss: actual fills, gaps and order behavior can change the result. Verify the current contract specifications and your provider’s conditions.
CME’s position-sizing lesson connects stop distance, per-contract risk and the amount of capital a trader chooses to put at risk. The useful principle is to calculate quantity from an explicit plan rather than letting an impressive-looking order-flow event dictate size.

Match the instruction to the intended behavior
A price constraint and a desire for prompt execution are different objectives. A limit can remain unfilled. A stop needs a trigger and then follows the behavior of its supported type; a stop-limit can leave exposure open if the market moves beyond its executable range. Confirm what your broker and exchange support for the selected product.
CME’s glossary notes protected market-order behavior and the trigger-plus-limit structure of stop-limit orders. Platform labels are not a substitute for these rules. Before using any order type, make sure you can explain what happens if price moves quickly, if there is insufficient quantity, or if the request is rejected.

A practical EdgeX pre-order checklist
Check the global account selector, full contract and expiry, quantity, order type and time in force. Then inspect market-data and order-channel status independently. A chart receiving quotes is not evidence that the execution channel is ready. An empty account selector or stale value is a reason to resolve the context before relying on the display.
Strategy Manager stores reusable configuration, including supported linked exits and trailing settings. A saved strategy is not proof that its exits are currently working. After submission, review the resulting orders and acknowledgements from the provider.
- Confirm the account and connection environment.
- Verify contract, quantity and intended order behavior.
- Review the planning estimate and costs.
- Check attached-exit settings where supported.
- Wait for reported status before deciding what action is needed next.
Follow state changes rather than button clicks
An interface action sends a request. The provider may accept, reject, partially fill or leave it pending. Review filled and remaining quantities alongside status. Repeating a request because the first response feels slow can create additional orders; check the actual state rather than assuming the click failed.
Modification and cancellation are requests too. Confirm the resulting status. If the order channel is unavailable, use the provider’s appropriate account tools or support process to establish exposure. A blank panel during a disconnect cannot prove that the account is flat.
Understand cancel, flatten and disconnect
In EdgeX, Cancel all requests cancellation of working orders for the selected account. Flatten also requests closing positions. Their effectiveness depends on the resulting provider state, so review it afterward. Disconnecting closes the EdgeX session; it does not itself cancel working orders or close positions.
Keep these distinctions visible in a written operating routine. Order Flow, Heatmap and Squawk are analysis aids, while account status is the execution record. EdgeX puts the relevant views close together, which can help you check the transition from observation to instruction, but the responsibility to confirm the reported outcome remains essential.
Common questions
Is the stop-distance calculation my maximum possible loss?
No. It is a planning estimate. Slippage, gaps, fees, order type and execution failures can produce a different result.
Does closing the browser close my positions?
No. Browser or connection state does not establish provider-side order or position state. Check the account with the provider when EdgeX cannot confirm it.
